When Everything Competes for Your Attention
Here is a beautiful story for you, courtesy of my grandfather, who farmed all his life.
There is a bird in the folktales that tried to eat with all its mouths at once and choked on the wind.
We live in a world that constantly asks for our attention.
Be more productive. Learn another skill. Reply the message. Read the article. Watch the video. Keep up with the news. Build your career. Grow your business. Stay informed. Don't fall behind.
And before we know it, our minds are in ten different places while our bodies are only in one.
Sometimes, we call it ambition. Sometimes, we call it being busy.
But sometimes, if we are honest, it is something else
Sometimes we keep ourselves moving because slowing down means sitting with thoughts we have been avoiding. Sometimes we say yes to everything because choosing one path means letting go of another. Sometimes we spread ourselves so thin that we no longer know what having our full attention feels like.
There is another saying my grandfather loved:
A man's compound may hold many huts, but a wanderer who sleeps in every one of them is a stranger in all.
I wonder if that is how many of us feel. Present everywhere, yet fully present nowhere. Connected to everyone, yet disconnected from ourselves.
Perhaps peace has never been about doing more.
Perhaps it begins with giving our attention back to the things that matter most. One conversation. One task. One moment. One breath at a time.
Because a mind that is constantly pulled in every direction rarely gets the chance to rest.
And maybe that is the quiet invitation today. Not to do less because you are incapable. Not to choose one thing because you have to.
But to remember that your attention is one of the most precious things you have. Be thoughtful about where you leave it.
Because where your attention goes, your inner life often follows.
Light and Warm Embrace,
