Redefining What Matters
About three years ago, I was asked what I want to be remembered for, and for the life of me, I couldn’t come up with a single appropriate response. Did I want to be remembered as a president, the kind whose name students cram into their heads for a history exam? Or maybe as a trailblazer like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the woman who broke barriers in so many ways? It was truly saddening because I realized that most of my wishes were material and momentary.
Three years later, I've finally found some clarity. I no longer seek to stand in the spotlight, to be the face that graces headlines or history books. Instead, I want to be behind the scenes, not in the literal sense, but as someone who helps others find joy. I want to be remembered as the person who helps people wear genuine smiles, the kind that they can carry into the world, not out of politeness or obligation, but from a place of real happiness.
It took me years to reach this understanding, but it may take others more or less time. In the end, it all comes down to knowing who you are. It’s perfectly fine if you want to be in the spotlight, but it’s just as meaningful if you don’t. What truly matters is leaving an essence that touches the world. Start by checking in on old friends or simply writing down your dreams. It’s your life; it’s your legacy. Own it.
With love,
Olamide from MANI.
