Am I Choosing or Are They Choosing?
Do you ever feel you’re changing yourself for someone, or wonder if you did something because you wanted to or because of someone else? It tends to happen over time, I think that’s why it’s so unnoticeable. We meet so many different people and find ourselves in so many different groups that we often find ourselves dealing with a lot of influences.
If we’re constantly doing this because of this person or not doing that because of that person, what happens to us? It’s kind of scary to think that we forget ourselves in the midst of trying to conform to the demands of others.
What about you and me? Where do we come in?
More and more, I think to myself, ‘Is this me?’ More and more I wonder, what do I like to do? What am I good at? What do I not like? Perhaps instead of constantly trying to learn about and understand others, it’s time to learn about me.
A lot changes when we understand ourselves, our strengths and shortcomings. For one, we definitely become more confident; no one can bully you into choosing an ice cream flavour anymore! I also think it’s easier to understand others when we know who we are in the first place.
It can be sad to realise that we don’t really know ourselves, but don’t worry; the very act of asking, ‘Who am I?’ is already a step forward, and I can tell you the journey ahead is a happy one.
